Whenever you feel overwhelmed by a major project or task, always break it down into smaller, more actionable items that you could easily manage. It is by consistently taking actions and mastering something small that we gain the confidence and momentum that we need to continue onto bigger things.

2. Utilizing the power of story

Confident people tell themselves empowering stories when they are faced with setbacks. They believe that there has to be a better way when things don’t turn out as expected. Instead of accepting defeat by telling themselves they are not good enough, they dig deep into their past memories and recall stories of how they were able to overcome obstacles, stories of how they were able to keep going even when things were tough. We all have those stories.

3. Practice, practice, practice

They say “repetition is the mother of all skills” or “practice makes perfect”? Perfection might not be achieved but practice definitely will help ones to make progress. When you keep doing something enough times, you become a master of it. It is through the mastery of certain skills that ones become more confident.

4. Ask higher quality questions

It is not uncommon that people get stuck while working on projects or assignments. It is by asking ourselves higher quality questions that enable us to get to higher quality solutions! How do we distinguish between high and low quality question? Consider the following two questions we might ask after we messed up with our presentation or when things didn’t go according to plans: (1) why do that always happen to me? and (2) which area of my presentation can I improve upon so that my audience will be more engaged next time? The second question is of higher quality since it focuses more on finding better solution!

5. Crush your self-limiting beliefs

People possess different self-limiting beliefs that prevent them from achieving the highest confidence level possible. People are brought up to believe certain things that are not true. Consider these statements that we probably have heard:

  • I should not reveal my true feelings because I will get judged.
  • I should not ask too many questions because that will make me look stupid.
  • I should not start a business until I have everything figured out.
  • Partnership in business is bad because there will be trouble down the road.
  • I can’t sing because my mom said so when I was 10 years old.

When we are able to identify the beliefs that hold us back, we will be more able to overcome it and achieve breakthrough towards our more confident selves.
